Photos and Videos Of Oil Rigs. Oil Rig Photo Collection
The following are photos of oil and gas drilling rigs on land and of. oil rig workers who are known as roughnecks. Most of the oil rig photos seen below were taken in the Permian Basin of Texas where rigs of all sizes operate. Small truck mounted rigs and truck mounted workover rigs are used to drill shallow to medium depth oil and gas wells and to re-enter producing wells to change tubing, etc. The worker in the photo below is known as a derrick man. He works up at the top of the oil rig and stacks the "stands" or combined joints of pipe back against the derrick. He works for hours at a time, with no breaks as the rig lowers or raises (called "tripping") the pipe in or out of the hole in stands that are one, two or three joints of pipe put together depending on whether the rig is a "single", "double" or "triple". He performs this work when new bits, mud motors, etc are added or when different sections of the well have been completed. One of the lines that you see in the neon rig picture, about 3/4 of the way up is an escape line which the derrick man can hook into and slide down in case the rig suffers a blowout. Many of the oil rig photos below are mine, if you are the author and want any photos removed, contact me at the bottom of this page. For anyone interested in getting a job in the oil and gas industry the two books that I recommend the most are The Nontechnical Guide To Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling and Production and A Primer Of Oilwell Drilling by Ron Baker. Both used by many colleges and technical schools as well as Oilfield Service companies in their training programs. For production only try Oil and Gas Production In Nontechnical Language. Drilling Technology In Nontechnical Language is a lower cost alternative to "A Primer Of Oilwell Drilling". All can be found in The Oilfield Bookstore, |
